OCCUPATION
As with any other Indian state, agriculture is the major occupation of people of Karnataka. The state has also made significant industrial growth and makes reasonable contribution to the health of Indian economy. Karnataka is well known for its silk and handicrafts in sandalwood since scores of years. The state is rich in mineral ore, and supplies all of India's gold. The other mining activities for ores in the state include copper, chromite, iron, mica, magnesite, etc. The production of electric power, besides other methods, is done by harnessing Cauvery, Sharavati, and Kali rivers.

Bangalore-
Bangalore called as the Silicon Valley of India, is one of the most developing city in the world. Having Kannada as the official language English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu etc are also spoken. A Garden city, City of Golf Courses, a Happening city are some of the attributes used for Bangalore.The Vidhan Soudha, the Lalbagh Gardens, the Indian Institute of Science and the Ulsoor Lake are the attractions of the city.
Mysore-
The royal city of Karnataka Mysore has more than its palaces, parks and temples in its treasure. Items made of sandalwood, rosewood and handicrafts items are world popular. The charm of Mysore history regains when one entered in the Fort and Palace of Tipu Sultan.
Mangalore-
A coastal town and major commercial center of Karnataka, Mangalore has Western Ghats in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west as its companion. Palm fringed beaches, lush green fields and vast forest are the attraction points of Mangalore.
Aihole-
Famous as the "Cradle of Indian Architecture", Aihole has over a hundred temples scattered around the village. The oldest temple here is, perhaps, the Lad Khan temple dating back to the 5th Century. Not to be missed is the Konthi Temple Complex.
Badami-
The capital of the early Chalukyas, Badami is picturesquely situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills. Badami is famous for its four cave temples - all hewn out of sand stone on the precipice of a hill.
Belgaum-
The district Headquarters, Belgaum is a charming blend of the old and the new. In the heart of Belgaum is the Fort, Kapileshwara Temple, Ananthashayana Temple etc..Belgaum also has some very impressive churches.
Bidar-
The northern-most part of Karnataka lies Bidar - a tiny district steeped in history. Bidar Fort, Rangin Mahal, Solah Kambah Masjid, Gagan Mahal are not to be missed.
Bijapur-
Think of Bijapur and the first thing that comes to mind is Gol Gumbaz, Jumma Masjid. You can spend days exploring Bijapur.
Dharwad-
Dharwad, calm, peaceful with a picturesque beauty, this town still retains its old-world charm. Dotting the town are a number of beautiful churches and temples. Dharwad is also a famous educational centre.
Gulbarga-
Gulbarga is a unique synthesis of two cultures. Filled with beautiful palaces, mosques, stately buildings and bazaars.
Hampi-
"Vijayanagara is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it...". You can still glimpse the splendour of Vijayanagara - one of the largest empires in the history of India - in its ruins. Hampi is full of surprises.
Pattadakal-
Pattadakal - a World Heritage Centre - has 10 major temples representing early Chalukyan architecture. The biggest temple here, is dedicated to Virupaksha. Besides this temple is a group of temples remarkable primarily, for representing two chief styles of Indian architecture, side by side.
FESTIVALS
Dussehra-
Dusshera is the main Hindu festival of Karnataka. This ten days festival was celebrated with extravagance by the rulers of Vijayanagar Empire. Later, this became a tradition. The festival was celebrated at Mysore where a Durbar was held for 9 days and on the 10th day a huge procession was taken out with decorated elephants, colorful folks and much more. It is still celebrated in Mysore with great pomp and show.
Yugadi-
Yugadi is considered as the New Year's Day in Kannada tradition. It falls on the late March or early April and is celebrated all over Karnataka. On this day the dinner is specially prepared and it starts with jaggery and neem leaves. This depicts that life is nothing but a bundle of joys and sorrows.
Karaga-
This festival is mainly celebrated at the Darmaraya Temple in Bangalore. It is celebrated on the full moon day of Chaitra, the first month of Hindu Calendar. This festival is celebrated in the honor of Draupathi, the spouse of Pandavas, famous religious characters from the great Hindu epic, Mahabharata.
Sri Vithappa-
This fair is held in the honour of Vithappa, the deity of the village, Vithappa. It is a three days festival and about 7 to 8 thousand people gather during the fair. This fair has a religious and folk importance.
The Godachi-
The Godachi fair is held at Godachi village in Ramdurg Taluk of Karnataka. It is held in the month of Kartik This fair is held in the honour of Shri Veerabhadra and it is organized by the government of Karnataka.
Shri Yellamma Devi-
Shri Yellamma Devi fair is held at Saundatti. It is held for about 5 times between October and February. But the Margasira is the biggest one, which is held on the full moon day.
Banashankari Devi-
The Banashankari Devi fair is held near Badami. It is an annual fair held in the month of January on the full moon day. This fair lasts for 10 to 12 days. At the fair, villagers buy agricultural items, utensils and other articles of domestic needs.
